America was once a land of giants. Not great financial deal-makers and schemers but people who worked together to make amazing machines, and wield them to defeat vastly dangerous foes.
This book tells an important part of the story of that America. Originally published in 1953, it is a full account of the development and production of the whole spectrum of ordnance for the U.S. Navy in World War II. Long out of print, it remains unique as a reference for those interested in World War II naval history and also for those seeking to understand how the huge technological and industrial achievements of that war could have been accomplished. The original text has been preserved intact except for correction of typographical errors and the addition of many notes to reveal more of the story. The 95 original illustrations have been preserved except where replaced with equivalents of better quality.
More than 34,000 words of new text have been added - equivalent to a whole book in itself - to fill in the gaps due to security restrictions and lack of knowledge at the time it was originally written, explain some points that may be obscure to readers today, and refer to scores of books and articles that provide further information on many of the topics of the book. One new section details the revolutionary acoustic homing torpedoes that could not even be mentioned in the original book. Other additions provide much deeper information on the problems with torpedoes during the war, how they were addressed, and how they affected the war. Guided missiles, one of the war's most significant developments, are addrssed in a new section, and another provides full information on the massive development of fire control radars and new systems for controlling antiaircraft fire. An entirely new section describes how the Navy came to realize that its antiaircraft defenses were dangerously weak and analyzes the effectiveness of its efforts to remedy the defects, based on combat data and the results of major operational tests.
Nearly 140 new illustrations have been added to show clearly virtually all of the major systems produced by the Bureau as well as its key activities. All of the visual material has been very carefully optimized for greatest clarity on Kindle platforms of all kinds. Many illustrations are in color, but can be read clearly on monochrome screens.
The result is a book that would run to more 690 pages in print but is easy to read on Kindle platforms, and available at a very affordable price. The book has been rearranged so that the free Kindle preview - which is longer than some entire Kindles - contains a full sampling not only of the text but of images drawn from throughout the book.
