Description
"From one end of the land to the other, there was the tax collector," wrote the Sumerian scribe, more than 4000 years ago. The corrupt king of Lagash needs those taxes to support his lavish lifestyle and his dreams of empire. But the high priests remember a time when they ruled the city, when they were the power in the land. And so when a tax collector is found murdered at a dissident temple, the king uses this as an excuse to seize control of the priesthood and the temple lands. The temple guard Ninurta hopes to find the assassin, to clear the name of the temple and to keep his job. But as riot and revolution spread through the city, it becomes clear that a reckoning is coming. Not even the truth will save his beloved temple. The idealistic reformer Urukagina leads the priesthood in their struggle, promising to bring the rule of law and justice to the city. If he can survive.
