Description
This booklet contains two lectures. The first is a clear but comprehensive explanation of what Socialism meant, and what the socialist movement was about, in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The lecture provides the sort of working understanding of the massive topic that all History students require.
The second lecture deals with the British Labour Party from its foundation in 1900 to its qualified electoral triumph of 1923, when it was able to form a minority government. The approach is analytical, not chronological, and explores why on the one hand the new party did so well, and on the other hand why it did not do better.
George Harris writes these lectures with the ambitious examination candidate in mind, who wants something more than the basic text books but is too busy to read full length monographs. As a result they are an ideal introduction for adults who gave up History at school and who want to refresh their knowledge.
