Description
East End, 1888. Twenty-year-old, Connie McKenzie has spent all of her life struggling to stay alive, in the desperate poverty of the 19th century Whitechapel. Dragged up in the slums, destitute and starving, she's managed to survive and make a reasonable, if modest life for herself. Connie takes on all of the unusual jobs that nobody else wants; she searches for lost dogs, finds wayward husbands and missing kids - and she's good at what she does.
Georgie Hastings is a nobody, a man with no home, no real job and no prospects. Brought up in the workhouse, mistreated and marginalised by everyone, he spends his wretched life doing odd jobs around the slaughterhouses of Whitechapel, sleeping in doss houses when he can find a few spare pennies... and killing women for their body parts.
When prostitute, Martha Tabram, is murdered, Connie finds herself reluctantly dragged into the hunt for the killer, later to be known as Jack the Ripper. She teams up with a street urchin called Charlie to scour the back alleys of the East End, visiting the murder sites and using her contacts in the area to piece together information. She knows that if she tries hard enough, she will catch the killer. When unsuspecting Connie pays a visit to the local slaughter house, she bumps into simple, endearing Georgie, never guessing that she has found Jack the Ripper. The trouble is, he's also found her.
