Description

The story of the Jacobite rebellions is filled with romantic heroes: Rob Roy, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Alan Breck Stewart and others. John Graham, Viscount Dundee, was the first of these, for he led the first Jacobite rebellion in Scotland, that began in 1689.

But "Bonnie" Dundee had two other nick-names, Bluidy Clavers and Black John of the Battles. He is both a mythical hero and a mythical villain in Scottish history, and by following the latter part of his career one learns a great deal about Scotland during one of its most troubled times.

This lecture takes Sir Walter Scott's well-known poem, "Bonnie Dundee" and, by going through it verse by verse, examins and explains a wide range of Scottish, Edinburgh and Highland history.

Unless you are already a specialist you are certain to learn something from this lecture, and if you are a visitor to Scotland, or a Scot who wants to learn more about your country's past, you could learn a lot.
