Description

In "Hello Everybody," A.M. Homes shows that when you're young, when your world is sheltered and your options for exploration limited, even a visit to a friend's house becomes an anthropological expedition; each family, an as-yet unknown tribe.

From the story:
"Neither siblings nor neighbors, he and Cheryl grew up together -- each the other's witness and confidant. He was the first one to see her nose job, her breasts; both the original ones and the add-ons. She saw his chin and his eyebrow piercing before he even did."

About Recommended Reading:
Great authors inspire us. But what about the stories that inspire them? Recommended Reading, the latest project from Electric Literature, publishes one story every week, each chosen by a great author or editor. In this age of distraction, we uncover writing that's worth slowing down and spending some time with. And in doing so, we help give great writers, literary magazines, and independent presses the recognition (and readership) they deserve.

About the Author:
A.M. Homes is the author of the memoir The Mistress's Daughter and the novels This Book Will Save Your Life, Music For Torching, The End of Alice, In a Country of Mothers, and Jack, as well as the story collections The Safety of Objects and Things You Should Know. Her books have been translated into twenty-two languages. She has published fiction and essays in The New Yorker, Granta, Harper's, McSweeney's, One Story, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair, where she is a contributing editor. She lives in New York City.
