"Bichon Frise - Unique Among Dogs" contains very valuable information that you will find a great source of information for years to come as you raise your pet.

Concerning the appearance of your Bichon, The double-layered coat is silky soft. The outer coat is 3 - 4 inches (7 to 10 cm) long, coarse and curly: the undercoat is soft and dense. This is what gives this dog its powder-puff unique quality. You won't have to worry about allergies either. Some are less curly than others. Their fur ranges in color from solid white, cream, grey and apricot. White is the preferred show color if you're thinking of showing off your little pride and joy. A small tint of buff, cream or apricot color sometimes shows up around the ears, snout, paws or body. The easiest way to clip your Bichon Frise is to do a puppy cut. This is the same length all over. For the show-ring, the Bichon Frise can be clipped like a poodle or with a long puffy coat; feet and muzzle clipped. As you can see by the picture, it makes for a great look.

Your pet is known for its merry and jolly nature. This shows up in the jaunty plumed tail carried over the back and the dark bright eyes. Your dog is probably 9 ½ and 11 ½ inches tall. But don't worry if he or she is a little over or under that. Compact and proportionately made, the Bichon Frise will stand proud and happy at your side, in your arms and your lap, wherever you go.

A healthy Bichon Frise has an expression of soft, dark-eyed, inquisitiveness. He is always alert! The black or very dark brown skin that surrounds the eyes - known as halos - accentuates the eye and enhances the expression. The eye rims are black. The nose is always black. The lips are also black and fine. Your Bichon Frise carries his head proudly on a long, arched neck that smoothly blends into the shoulders.

Coat texture is an extremely important factor. The undercoat should be soft and dense, the outer coat coarse and curly. This combination results in a coat that is soft and substantial, similar to plush or velvet which, when patted, will spring back. When bathed and brushed, the hair stands off the body, creating an overall powder-puff look. Remember to trim your little friend to reveal the body's natural outline. It's never cut so short as to be overly trimmed or squared off, but should be rounded off from any direction. Fringes about the head, beard, moustache, ears and tail are left longer. Longer head hair is trimmed so as to create an overall rounded impression. The topline should appear level. Overall, the coat should be long enough to maintain that powder-puff look that is the breed's signature characteristic. When your Bichon Frise moves at a trot, it should be free, precise and effortless.
