In questo volume sono raccolti sette gioielli della letteratura tedesca. Sette opere in cui la creatività letteraria ha toccato i suoi vertici. Si parte con Goethe e I dolori del giovane Werther, romanzo epistolare simbolo dello Sturm und Drang, che anticipa temi propri del romanticismo tedesco, in cui si entra appieno, con Gli elisir del diavolo di Hoffmann, matura rappresentazione della catastrofe che minaccia l'individuo se abbandona le certezze illuministe. Si prosegue con Il processo di Kafka, storia dai tratti surreali in cui un impiegato, Josef K., viene accusato, arrestato e processato per motivi che nessuno vuole rivelargli. Nel suo capolavoro La Marcia di Radetzky, Roth dà vita a un affresco di rara forza narrativa, in cui le vicende storiche dell'Impero austro-ungarico si intrecciano a quelle umane di una famiglia fedele sostenitrice dell'imperatore. Sempre all'interno della crisi della società mitteleuropea si iscrive I turbamenti del giovane Törless di Musil, storia dei tormenti e delle scoperte che accompagnano il superamento dell'adolescenza di uno studente e dei suoi compagni di collegio. Concludono il volume Novella degli scacchi, capolavoro dell'austriaco Stefan Zweig, le cui opere furono bruciate nei roghi nazisti, e Doppio sogno di Schnitzler, quasi una favola in bilico tra sogno e realtà, resa celebre dal film di Kubrick Eyes Wide Shut.
