Description

This Savannah, Georgia job felt odd to Tori Young, so odd that she hadn't even spoken to her client, using only email to communicate. Restoring old houses was always creepy in a way, but this time was different. This time is was almost eerie. Her first meeting with Cole Marshall hadn't gone well, because he'd tried to pick her up, unaware of who she was. The dinner meeting, however, went better. His reaction at finding out that she was V. J. Young, restoration expert and architect, put her more at ease with him. But it didn't ease her inner concern for the job. It had only been empty for about 25 years. Why? Just because his mother and uncle had run off together? And what he he meant by his almost threatening remark at the end of the evening?

As Tori began her work on the plantation mansion, the differing measurements inside and outside of the house didn't match up. Realizing that there had been an alcove in the former chapel, she decided to tear down the wall--only to discover a pile of bones. Cole begged her not to report it, to instead let him call his best friend, who was also a medical examiner. Cole's friend examined the bones for a possible identification and was murdered in the process.

She spotted shadows of a man inside the house, as well as in the woods behind the mansion. Was Cole, who didn't like the idea of her living at the house while restoring after they found the body, keeping an eye on her? Cole, however, insisted that he hadn't been there. Then items she thought she'd put one place turned up in different areas of the house. Then the closeness she felt to Cole began to grow under the stressful renovation.

When Cole found her lying in the sun unconscious, he rushed her to the hospital. An overdose of fiorinal that she'd taken for a migraine, the doctor said, But Tori knew she had only taken one. Then the pilot lights on the stove went out, causing Tori to lose consciousness again. Somebody was obviously trying to kill her because all of the windows had been nailed shut and the locks on the doors jammed--just like somebody was getting into and out of the house without being detected.

Remembering that the house had been part of the underground railroad during the Civil War, Tori began searching for possible concealed exits. She found one--and another skeleton. She also found a tunnel under the house.

What lay at the end of the tunnel? Would it answer all of the questions about what was happening within that house?
