Once upon a time, a young man did live,
He was rather selfish and did not give.
He had a young wife who was but kind,
but sharing was never in his mind.

The young man had a father quite old,
and together, wood was what they sold.
The father lived in the same house as they,
but the son wanted a life in his own way.

The wife once went to the market in town,
she saw a plump chicken with feathers brown.
"Oh what a lovely meal this will surely make,
this chicken I definitely will have to take."

She paid only a penny for it was fine,
they would have something tasty to dine.
"Husband dear, we're having good supper,
this will be an excellent mood upper."

"Excellent wife, for it was a long day.
Now what is this supper you say?"
"We are having chicken on a roast.
Roasted food you enjoy the most."

His mouth began to water a lot,
to eat right on was his only thought.
He could smell that it was divine,
"All this roasted chicken is mine!"

Then he heard clearly his father come,
for his father had a very distinct hum.
"Quick hide the roast," he told his wife,
"all except the potatoes and the knife!"

His wife frowned and became mad.
being selfish was indeed very bad!
"This is your father. Won't you share?"
"I'm really hungry. I really don't care!"

He swiftly snatched the plate away,
never wanting to share come what may.
His father entered and sniffed the air,
such a wonderful smell was there!

The roast chicken the son had then hid,
the wife had to do what she was bid.
"What is for supper?" his father asked.
The wife just let the question past.

"Just taters, father and nothing more.
A poor man's dinner like all before."
His father still smiled content and ate,
thanking the wife for the food so great.

The father then finished and went out,
and all the while the wife gave a pout.
The son took the roast that he hid,
for he had kept it always under a lid.

As he opened the lid he gave a shout,
for a great big toad was up and about!
"Wife what is this? Perhaps a cruel trick?
Throw this toad away now and real quick!"

But the toad jumped onto his face,
and there it stayed quiet in place.
The wife was afraid to touch the toad,
because on its back venom flowed.

Only the son could finally take it off,
because it was indeed very rough.
The toad had to be fed day and night,
and this was the son's sorry plight.

The toad would never let him be,
staying with him very selfishly.
And that was how the son did live,
All this because he did not give.

And the moral of this story is:

Ungrateful means one is not thankful. The son was not thankful for the good things that happened in his life, like a very good dinner. He decides that it is only he who is deserving of it, never caring about what others think. Remember, sharing is caring!
