Prequel to Cuckoo in the Nest, the story opens in Scotland in 1831 and follows the young life of sixteen years old Margaret Cameron. A rebellious, spirited girl, Margaret travels to England with her parents to attend the funeral of Amelia Stuart, the wife of her father's oldest friend, Ian.
Jealous of the attention lavished on her new baby brother, Margaret is drawn to Ian when he visits her family. Shocked when he proposes marriage, the prospect of escaping her dull life in Scotland was to set her on a path which would change the lives of many of those she met along the way and ruin others.
