Description
It's summer time and loner 11-year-old Nicholas Rex and his family are off on holiday to one of England's most beautiful seaside towns - St. Ives, Cornwall.
A chance encounter with local girl Millie heralds the start of a beautiful friendship and for a while everything is so perfect that not even his grumpy sister Tara and her holiday romance with local bad-boy Mackerel Mike can ruin the fun.
However, beneath the veneer of sun, sea, sand and ice cream, dark forces are gathering and those forces have his sister very much in their sights. As young girls start disappearing from the town, Nicholas is assaulted by a sequence of strange visions of Tara trapped in a creepy dungeon cell alongside the missing girls, courtesy of a band of ghouls who call themselves the Spooky Brides. But are these gruesome witches to blame or is there a more reasonable explanation?
With the police clueless, it falls to Nicholas and Millie to find out. Time though is not on their side and soon supernatural events began to manifest around the town. Pitted against an army of sand kits, stone cats and jelly sacks, Nicholas and Millie end up in a fight for survival against the powerful Spooky Brides.
Based around a riddle full of kits, cats, sacks and brides, the question that needs answering is just how many will leave St. Ives alive?St. Ives and the Spooky Brides is a fun tale for middle grade readers set against the backdrop of a very British summer holiday. Packed with gentle comedy and served up with lashings of summery adventure, this is one treat everyone in the family will enjoy.
