Description
A Novella of Mystery, Magic, and Marionettes in 19th Century Burma
A traditional Burmese puppetry troupe is more than meets the eye: these puppets hold living spirits.
Disaster strikes the troupe on the eve of a royal wedding. One of the puppets is murdered - his neck broken, his spirit gone - and they can't perform without him. If they fail to perform at the King's command, they could lose their livelihoods, or worse, their lives.
Aung, the troupe's elderly singer, must navigate court intrigues and negotiate with angry spirits in search of answers. Joining him is a an unexpected, and impish, assistant. Their investigation shows them ancient gods seeking recognition, long-lost friends who have changed by the years, and a society turning from the old ways.
Can they discover who is sabotaging their performance and save the troupe?
This story sparkles with engaging characters, and is filled with the magic and traditions of South East Asia.
"A wonderful blend of conspiracy and playful spirits, with a pair of unique detectives - with no strings attached!" --Steven Poore, author of Heir of the North.
