Description

There is nothing ordinary about ORDINARY LIVES, a new historical novel by British writer and poet Bethany W. Pope. Her riveting story captures London's early nineteenth-century demimonde world in all its shadowy desperations and perversity. A novel of Gothic suspense, it resonates as both a classic love story and a modern, feminist cautionary tale with its every dark and quirky turn.

At the book's heart is Mary, its central character and chief irony: a pituitary dwarf whose large intelligence, courage, and unyielding principles help her overcome her diminutive form. And there is John: a gentleman's third son and unloved momma's boy who risks reputation and even life itself to find real, nurturing love. Add an unscrupulous Frankenstein-like doctor, a transgender sexual mentor, and a craven reverend, and the reader meets a cast of colorful characters usually found in the work of Dickens or the Brontë sisters.

ORDINARY LIVES is a special treat by a rising star with extraordinary talents and is the inaugural book published by Steven Jay Griffel under the SJG - A Steven Jay Griffel Book imprint of Stay Thirsty Publishing.

Bethany W. Pope received her Ph.D. from Aberystwyth University's Creative Writing program, and her M.A. from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She was awarded the first Luigi Bonomi Associates Prize for Fiction and was a finalist for the Faulkner-Wisdom Awards, the Cinnamon Press Novel competition, and the Ink, Sweat and Tears poetry commission. She was recently highly commended at the Poetry London Competition. She also placed in the Bare Fiction Poetry Competition and the Bristol Poetry Prize. Bethany is an avid fencer, specializing in sabre, smallsword, and backsword, as well as a hiker and a comic book enthusiast. She lives in the United Kingdom with her husband Matthew.
