Description
Chet Carter is going nowhere fast. After a fight with his father, Jethroe, he moves in with his Uncle Bart, a moonshiner. Chet's alienation with his father began after his mother died. Chet's older brother, Aaron, joins the army and boxes for the battalion, but Chet's fighting aptitude is seen as reckless and gets him in trouble.
Chet smashes a pool cue over the head of Joe Sullivan in a bar fight. At the same time his girlfriend, Grace, dumps him. He is disillusioned with his life, so he moves to Memphis to pursue his dream of becoming a musician.
Chet gets a job and a new girlfriend and things are going well. However, the Sullivan brothers are hell bent on revenge. Back in his hometown Michael Sullivan comes looking for Chet to settle the score. He first encounters Uncle Bart before coming up against Aaron, who is home on leave.
Chet is encouraged to stay calm by his new boss, Bill Sanders, and his girlfriend, Rosalie, urges him to control his temper. On a trip back home, Chet hears stories from the past that cause him to evaluate his relationship with Jethroe. Friction between the Carter family members dissipates, as hostility towards the Sullivan's grows.
Things come to a head when a past feud between the Carter's and the Sullivan's comes to light.
