Description
James Barnes' 1896 history of the United States Navy in the War of 1812 provides an exciting look at American ships and leaders during the Age of Sail. Describing actions from the USS Constitution's famed victory in 1812 over the HMS Guerrière to the final shots of war between the USS Hornet and the HMS Cornwallis in April 1815, Barnes details the maneuvers, the broadsides, and the boardings of the US Navy's fight during the second war with England. Barnes also describes some of the key events involving American privateers, and often overlooked aspect of the War of 1812. In contrast to Theodore Roosevelt's analytical approach in his work on the US Navy in War of 1812, Barnes' writing focuses on storytelling. In place of Roosevelt's analysis and discussions of cannon-size, throw-weight, or ship-construction Barnes concentrates on the events of the encounters and the role of effective leadership and heroism in the American naval victories and defeats.
