Description
This is a special issue of Compelling Science Fiction. It's a companion to our very first print collection of short stories that was funded through Kickstarter; all the stories in this issue were written by authors printed in that collection. All five stories in this issue are brand-new and stand-alone:
"Shatter like Steel, Bend like a Bubble" by Pip Coen. When a small country is threatened with annexation by the Grantian empire, their military leaders decide to use a newly developed anaesthetic system to block all pain in their soldiers. "Pruned" soldiers also no longer feel many other things. When the war goes on longer than anyone anticipated, the scientist who created the nerve treatment decides to do the unthinkable.
"Reflected in Mirrored Skies", by Deborah L. Davitt. The planet Venus is in the initial stages of a terraforming effort, and for years specialists from all over the world have been signing twenty-year contracts to live and work above the clouds of Venus. The giant dirigibles that manufacture the world-spanning mirrors need to be maintained. However, not all the inhabitants are happy with the status quo...
"Rebirth" by Mike Adamson. Marie Somerville has been in pain for decades -- arthritis, migraines, digestive issues, and dozens of age-related maladies have plagued her. Despite her issues, she's never let her failing body put her out of commission. Now, though, full body prosthetic replacement will enable her to finally obtain a body that's as strong as her mind, as long as her spoiled stepson doesn't get his way.
"The Seeds We Plant" by Benjamin C. Kinney. Limbic implants allow emotions to be explicitly controlled. When disaster strikes on a colony ship, emotional control may well be the deciding factor when it comes to saving the nursery.
"The Alien in Redwood Creek" by Steve Wire. A fantastically advanced civilization visits Redwood National Park, and wants to trade. What happens when advanced aliens want to trade with you, but their laws only oblige them to respect your rights as long as you agree to negotiate?
