Description
Ted arrives in Deep South, Depression era Cottageville as the new owner of the main employer in the county- the local cotton mill. As he arrives at the hotel, Ted is startled to see a young debutante, dressed for a lavish ball, run in front of his fancy new Buick Roadmaster.
The hotel manager dodges Ted's questions about the woman and his desire to inspect Grayson Mansion. A teenage porter shares that the antebellum house is haunted and cautions Ted about the woman being a ghost.
Ted doesn't believe in ghosts and keeps an appointment to inspect the estate. His realtor is an engaging young woman named Savannah. She has a touch of Vivien Leigh, one of Ted's favorite actresses.
Days later, Ted can't get Savannah out of his mind and plans to meet up with her to make an offer on the property. Ted knows Savannah loves the mansion, and hopes his purchase will encourage her towards a path of permanency with him also.
Souls of the South is a fantasy short story that examines the Great Depression, ghosts, and the Civil War.
