Description
Gothic novelist Ann Radcliffe and her husband travel through the Netherlands and along the Rhine on their way to Switzerland. This is just six years after the French Revolution; war with France is going on in the background, and the pair seem oddly surprised when they encounter Austrian troops on the march. The chatty style is very appealing -- Radcliffe reports on the state of inns, the food they are offered, the rudeness of her hosts and difficulties buying books. Various palaces (most devoid of furniture) are visited, churches and castles viewed and gardens enjoyed. Her popularity as an author is certainly unsurprising -- she has a definite way with words.
