Description
8 years after the publication of the Harvard Classics, Colliers released a second book compilation from Harvard President Charles Eliot. While smaller (only 20 volumes instead of 50), the collection would include only works of fiction.
The set breaks down to country of origin:
The first 9 volumes contain works from British authors.
"The History of Tom Jones", "A Sentimental Journey", "Pride and Prejudice", "Guy Mannering", "Vanity Fair", "David Copperfield" and "The Mill on the Floss".
Volumes 10 and 11 are for American authors.
"The Scarlet Letter", "Rappaccini's Daughter", "Rip Van Winkle", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "Eleonora", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Purloined Letter", "The Luck of Roaring Camp", "The Outcasts of Poker Flat", "The Idyl of Red Gulch", "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog", "The Man Without a Country" and "The Portrait of a Lady".
Volumes 12 and 13 reserved for the French authors.
"Notre Dame de Paris", "Old Goriot", "The Devil's Pool", "The Story of a White Blackbird", "The Siege of Berlin", "The Last Class -- The Story of a Little Alsatian", "The Child Spy", "The Game of Billiards", "The Bad Zouave", "Walter Schnaffs' Adventure", Two Friends"
Volumes 14 and 15 go to the German authors.
"Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship", "The Sorrows of Young Werther", "The Banner of the Upright Seven", "The Rider on the White Horse" and "Trials and Tribulations".
Volumes 17, 18 and 19 are for Russian authors.
"Anna Karenina", "Crime and Punishment", "A House of Gentlefolk" and "Fathers and Children"
And Volume 20 remains for the rest of the collection. One Spanish author and two Norwegian.
"Pepita Jimenez", "A Happy Boy", and "Skipper Worse".
This set is complete and includes all frontispiece art found in the original books.
This IS a public domain work. Some editions you will find are unedited OCR versions that contain frequent errors, no formatting (like bold or italicized text) and large gaps where one page ends and the next begins. This version has been restored.
