And not just from harder classes and cold cafeteria pizza -- no, the kids at Winston are being haunted by a ghost.

A ghost who doesn't play nice.

A ghost who hurts every kid it interacts with.

Well, seventh grader Jimmy Phung might be many things -- messy, unfocused, and failing his classes -- but one thing he is not is a coward!

Together with a ragtag group of misfits and losers, Jimmy sets out to find the ghost before it hurts any more kids.

Only ghosts just might be the most normal part about the Weirdness at Winston Middle...

EXCERPT FROM THE WEIRDNESS AT WINSTON MIDDLE
"There's this ghost been terrorizing the girls at Winston Middle," he said to a group of eager students in the cafeteria one cloudy weekday afternoon. "And while you may all be content allowing this ghost to run wild, I am not."

You shoulda seen him that day: he had one knee propped up on his chair, his arms folded across it like a sea captain or a military commander. A carton of chocolate milk hung lazily in his right hand, and he drank casually through a straw to interrupt his words. He looked older than he'd ever looked in his life. The usual filth decorating his clothes and his face didn't seem filthy anymore. It seemed like the wardrobe of a man who had lived a long, tough life. Not the filth of a kid who dove into a puddle of mud during gym class during a particularly intense game of Ultimate Frisbee.

"Gee, isn't Jimmy Phung a little too old to believe in ghosts?" Tricia said.

Jimmy grinned. "Same old Tricia. Neighborhood cynic."

"Jimmy, I don't even know what that means."

"It means you'd believe there was a ghost here if I could show ya there was a ghost," he said. "And that's exactly what I'm gonna do."
