Detective Inspector Charlie Crile works in the historic and beautiful county of Durham. He enjoys his job. He's good at it and is well respected by his peers. Charlie is happily married, has good friends, and altogether he has an ideal life. Then, out of the blue, he finds himself the prime suspect in the murder of someone he has never met, in a place he has never been, and bit by bit his perfect life starts to disintegrate. A dark secret from Charlie's past, of which he himself seems unaware, has risen and is pursuing his perfect life with every intention of destroying it. After a shocking final showdown, thinking he has dealt with his past and finally put it behind him, Charlie moves on with his life. He resumes his job and finds himself investigating the brutal murder of a woman with a seemingly endless list of suspects. Everyone of them with secrets, including the victim herself. Meanwhile a crime baron from the north has designs on extending his operation into County Durham. Charlie and his team must try everything they can to stop him spinning his web throughout their patch. Later, while Charlie is trying to solve the mystery of a nine-month-old girl who has seemingly disappeared into thin air, he hears of the murder of a nurse with whom he is acquainted. While Charlie follows seemingly impossible evidence in the search for the baby girl, and his colleagues carry out their own investigation into the nurse's death it slowly starts to become apparent that the darkness in Charlie's own past is regaining power. This time Charlie has even more to lose and there can only be one winner.
