Description

"A superb portrait of a bloody and brutal age... An ambitious and entertaining series." Richard Foreman, author of Spies of Rome

The Red Death

568.

King Arthur's grandson, Coel ap Amhar, tells the story of his life.

His tale begins after the death of Arthur in battle. Britain is plunged into chaos.

Coel and his mother flee overseas. They take Arthur's sword, Caledfwlch, once possessed and wielded by Julius Caesar.

Known as The Red Death, the blade is rumoured to possess unearthly powers.

Coel joins the Roman army under Flavius Belisarius.

The Briton makes an enemy of the corrupt Empress of the East, Theodora, and falls into the clutches of Gelimer, the mad King of the Vandals.

To prove himself before the Emperor, Coel is forced to fight for his life in the arena against Theodora's champion. The outcome of the bloody duel will decide not only his fate, but that of the Empire.

Siege of Rome

537.

The Roman Empire is on the march.

After victory in North Africa, Emperor Justinian dreams of restoring the Western Empire.

Coel ap Amhar, King Arthur's grandson, has defeated the empress's champion in the arena. To escape her vengeance, he joins the army bound for Italy.

Justinian dispatches his best general, Belisarius, with a great army to drive the Goths from Italy and recover Rome.

The campaign is initially successful. But an advance can quickly turn into a rout.

Rome is besieged by Vitiges, the dreaded King of the Goths, who wishes to expel the Romans once and for all and conquer their ancient homeland for himself.

Coel must fight on more than once front. He is stalked by assassins, sent by his enemies in Constantinople.

The soldier's life - and the fate of the Empire - are at stake as Belisarius makes his final stand in the siege of Rome.

Flame of the West

551.

The Romans have almost regained their homeland.

Now they must march upon the capital of the Goths at Ravenna.

Coel ap Amhar, now a veteran officer, is one of the few men Belisarius can trust. He carries his famous sword, once wielded by Julius Caesar, in the final engagements to conquer the Italian mainland.

Yet there is more to winning a war than battles. Undermined by enemies in Constantinople, Belisarius suffers betrayal.

Coel is dragged with him into the melting pot of treachery and politics, until a final devastating blow almost destroys his loyalty to the empire.

The discovery of his son, Arthur, forces the ageing Coel back into the army. The warrior will take part in a final effort to reconquer Italy.

From the sea-battle of Sena Gallica, to the slaughter of Taginae, Coel must fight like never before to save himself and his bloodline.
