Description
In 1975 I had the second worst experience in my life and this experience included one of the strangest co-incidences I've ever come across.
I was flying helicopters in Bolivia, working two weeks on and a week off. The oil concession was ten thousand square miles in the Beni Region just east of the Andes in the western-most part of the Amazonian Basin. It was beautiful county, the jungle broken by 'fingers' of swampy grassland, great for raising cattle. These lush grass areas held an abundance of wild life giant anteaters, rhea (South American ostrich) and the huge rodent capibara living in its strange symbiotic relationship with the local gators. Big gators. Gators that are not even considered adult until they are 12 feet long and regularly achieve 20 feet in length. There were anaconda and poison snakes and piranha by the millions.
This happened one terrible week in 1975 when a dozen boy scouts on their way to the Boy Scout Jamboree in the United States, went missing on a flight in western Amazonia, in Bolivia.
