Description

A 38-page single-spaced research and exegetical paper done in a doctoral seminar at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1999. The paper includes an extensive appendix on lexical details, and one on text-critical questions.

Here is one segment of the paper: This is why Jesus' sacrifice is effective for us -- it involves both material and spiritual, both exterior and interior, both earthly and heavenly. Jesus bridges the worlds in a way that nothing else could. Although the tabernacle was a copy of a heavenly pattern, the sacrifices foreshadowed a sacrifice that was made on earth. Attridge writes, "The reality of that sacrifice consists not simply in its physical quality, but in the willingness with which it is made. Hence, it is the interior disposition of the act which makes it the heavenly or spiritual event that our author holds it to be."
The psalm contrasted sacrifices with obedience, and our author viewed one as superseding the other, yet being fulfilled by a combination: a willing sacrifice. As Gordon says, "Obedience is not contrasted with sacrifice in this passage but rather finds its fulfillment in sacrifice." Two principles are thereby merged, and this is the genius of the passage. Jesus obeyed -- did God's will -- by the sacrifice of his own body. Both the internal and the external were involved in fulfilling and replacing the old approach to God. The conscience, an internal and spiritual part of humanity, was cleansed by an act of the will, the internal part of humanity responsible for sin and cultic defilement. The physical sacrifices of the old cultus were not eliminated through a purely physical act, nor a purely spiritual one. There was a physical, earthly, bodily sacrifice that was the result of the spiritual, heavenly, volitional sacrifice. Jesus bridged the earthly and heavenly worlds to make a sacrifice that effectively removes sin, cleanses the conscience, and thus permits access to God.
