Description
Here is an unusual readable volume by and English writer who deserves to be much better known in the United States. It is an extraordinary panorama of famous historical figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Marlow, Queen Elizabeth, King George III, Francis Drake, Napoleon, Leonardo Da Vinci, Wu Taotsz, Cleopatra, and Jesus Christ. To those who are not familiar with these vignettes, they will come as an excellent introduction to many of the great characters of history.
Capes' style is straight forward. His characters speak in the language of their time. In addition, Mr. Capes is able to recreate their social costumes as well.
Bernard Capes was a prolific Victorian writer. His Historical Vignettes was first published in 1910 in England. It was edited by Edmund Brown and first published in America in the fifties by Bruce Humphries of Boston.
