With the start of the Cultural Revolution, my older brother and I, both ardent believers in Mao's words and policies, joined the Red Guards to sweep away all vestiges of capitalism and the Four Olds: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. I found myself with the power to make life-altering decisions about the lives of suspected traitors to the cause of class struggle, all the while a naïve teenager coping with the issues of adolescence.
