Description
IA collection of short stories written by the Ventnor Scribblers, a community café writer's group based on the Isle of Wight.
The first and last stories in the collection go to the heart of what's quirky about the Isle of Wight and Ventnor in particular. An Old Lady just can't stop knitting in the first story and in the follow-up story readers are taken on a journey to find just the right place where the cascade of knitting can serve a useful purpose. A predecessor to yarn bombing.
Cave Canem is directly inspired by Brading Roman Villa and brings to life how the servants during those times had to duck and dive to survive. Quite a scary story.
The Quiet Grave is ghost story set at the end of the 19th century in Knighton Gorges.
Sam, The Island Dragon is about a young boy who spends a night out alone on Brighstone down in search of a dragon.
The Bad Tempered Hob-Goblin stamps about the Isle of Wight causing misery and mayhem, but will he get his come-uppance?
The Hidden Past uncovers the darker side of Islanders' connection with the sea.
Birdhead is a boy who dreams. He lives in his dreams and sometimes the dreams merge with reality to chilling effect.
Luccombe Cottage is about two handsome young men and an old crone. This story will make you laugh.
A Visit and also Thin Lizzie are stories that are inspired by Ventnor . Dark, mysterious buildings feature in the first and unexpected sun worshippers in the second.
For those who've visited the Isle of Wight, the places mentioned may bring back fond memories. For those who live here or have family connections, perhaps you'll think of familiar places in a different way. Perhaps Birdhead, Thin Lizzie and Sam the Island Dragon will entice others to make the journey across the Solent.
Friends of Ventnor Library are running a range of children's activities to encourage reading and writing, 12% of any profits will be donated to this scheme from the sale of Telling Tales.
