An elderly man found unconscious, bound and gagged in a toilet at Manchester Airport starts a search for a wanted criminal Ronald Clarke. It is established that he has taken the victim's place on a flight to The Gambia, but too late to apprehend him before he disappears into the country.
Clarke attempts to re-establish links with a former girl friend now married and living in The Gambia. His approach is strongly rebuffed and, some days later, he is found dead and brutalised, tied to a sacred baobab tree.
Detective Inspector Elspeth Sanderson had been monitoring Clarke's movements, as he was believed to have made off with the proceeds of a major robbery for which an associate has been imprisoned. She is despatched to The Gambia to help the local police investigation, led by local Detective Inspector Boubacar Sidibeh. Their inquiries take them across The Gambia and reveal a more complex situation than they had expected.
