Description
Originally published as "Texas Heat", this collection was the winner of the 2005 Texas Review Fiction Prize. The novella "The Shadow That Lost Its Man" was originally published by Simon & Schuster and reveals the author's preoccupation with Africa which provides the setting for five of his eight novels. The work has been cited as an erotic masterpiece and also as a vivid insight into the nature of South African apartheid. Eroticism is also the subject of "Two Cars on a Hillside", an O'Henry nominee and Best American Erotica winner. The experimental title story, "Eleven Beds" is a lyrical narrative about a lifelong marriage and its sexual landscape. "Texas Heat" was included in The Best American Mystery Stories and demonstrates the author's versatility as he moves into perhaps our most popular genre. The killer in this tale is one of dozens of eccentric characters in the volume.
WILLIAM HARRISON, celebrated author of the Sci-Fi classic film Rollerball, is also one of the country's most revered short story writers. Rollerball, in fact, started as a short story. Harrison's stories reveal unforgettable characters in settings that span the globe. His storytelling voice is direct and powerful, one-of-a-kind.
HARRISON is the author of eight novels -- five of them set in Africa -- as well as two previous volumes of short stories, essays, and major screenplays, including the original Rollerball and Mountains of the Moon. A Texan, he co-founded the Creative Writing Program at the University of Arkansas and still lives in Fayetteville.
