Description
It's the news Winfrith least wants to hear. A rider appears in Englefield, announcing that her husband Leofranc has been captured by invading Danes. He's not the only Saxon to have disappeared either. Dunstan, a wealthy but unpopular thegn, has gone missing from the same raiding party and is later found murdered. What can she do? Wessex is at war and no-one seems to have the time or desire either to try and secure Leofranc's release or to unearth Dunstan's killer. To make matters worse there's even a hint that the two men had argued violently on the morning Dunstan died. There's only one course open to her. Ask some searching questions herself. It's not long before secrets begin to emerge involving the forgery of charters, the theft of land and the struggle for power within Wessex's own ruling family. But someone feels threatened enough to decide she must be silenced. With few allies and forced by the fighting to keep on the move she's tempted to give up... until someone attacks her and leaves her for dead. She survives the attack, determined now not to be scared off. Whatever the danger, she will find Dunstan's killer. She will clear Leofranc of any suspicion. She will get her husband back, however much others try to thwart her.
