Description

Historically, "status quo" in Israel referred to an agreement between Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, and the religious parties concerning religious jurisdiction over daily life. But over the decades, "status quo" has come to describe a beleaguered peace process, where not much is changing and a situation of conflict has become normalized. What such a consensus feels like is the question Sh'ma asked a range of writers: Given current geopolitical realities, does the status quo represent the only rational approach? Is it sustainable? Does it mean different things to different people? Has culture taken on an efflorescence in the wake of political stagnation?
