Description

Shall We Have Magic? is a book of poems by Alan Baxter, featuring the artwork of Tom Romano, and edited by Kyle Torke. "I usually write about the eternal happenings in nature, but in my poems the Divine usually turns up in areas not usually expected." --This is what Alan Baxter states in the interview given him in Richard Ramson's documentary Bohemia: The Life of a New York City Poet. In Baxter's book Shall We Have Magic? you will not only find very interesting poems about nature's grandeur, but you will also find a skewed universe where God's awesome presence can be felt in a college lecture hall gun-downed by an insane young student, in a kinky, raves- after- hours NYC party hosted by a suicide-minded doorman, and in the whisperings within "the loneliness of the lover/aching for his passionate partner." As poet/songwriter Robin Small-McCarthy says: "Alan Baxter's poetry is a delightfully eclectic, enlightening smorgasbord of humor, pathos, and social commentary--wonderfully subversive." Alan Baxter is also a film-maker whose career began in the mid-1970's with the making of a short 16mm film entitled "Dakota". Then in 1978, John Updike granted him permission to make a short-film dramatization of his short story "Ace in the Hole". Since then Alan has co-produced many independent movies, featuring such actors as Adam West (TV Batman series) and Annie Golden (Hair). In 2004, his feature film Barriers, featuring the legendary British personality Quentin Crisp (Naked Civil Servant) was picked up for distribution by Westlake Entertainment: (www.Westlakeent.com). It can also be seen on Netflix. Mr. Baxter directed this movie, which also won the Shirley Clarke Award at the Huntington Independent Film Festival in Long Island. Alan is also producing another independent film entitled "Juan and Emmet", a provocative film dealing with the dark regions of human sexuality. Baxter's poetic magic is both shocking as well as exhilarating, yet when the sorcery confronts ultimate reality, sparks will certainly fly off in the air.
