Description
The year prior to the nominating convention involved the full array of Party Caucuses, Primaries Campaigns resulting on the eve of the nomination at the National Convention in New York City, Carol Ann's mother, the presumptive choice of her party fell victim to a cerebral stroke. The candidate, rushed to the hospital together with her husband and daughter, the country held its breath. Assured by Doctors his wife was resting comfortably, George Lafayette, Carol Ann's father, was compelled by party leadership to speak to the convention in the final hour of the evening session. Further consultation with the Doctors provided a prognosis of his wife's condition. While hopeful, the report negated any chance of continuing the bid for the presidency. With Carol Ann at his side George Lafayette brought the news to the nation before the convention in his inimitable style. As his words were sinking in to the delegates to the convention a slow chant of Carol Ann' name began in the hall. Standing onstage behind Carol Ann and her father was the sitting President of the United States. As the President approached Carol Ann the chant from the convention floor grew louder and signs appeared with Carol Ann's name hurriedly written across her mother's picture. Following a brief conference with Carol Ann and her father, the President announced to the convention that Carol Ann would speak to the convention on the following evening. The convention erupted in massive cheers and applause. Carol Ann helped her father from the stage.
Throughout the overnight, support for the thought born in the chant swelled across the country. Meetings were held as Carol Ann and her father went to spend the night at the hospital. Following the near sleepless night the news in the morning from the Doctors brought further encouragement still to cancel out Carol Ann's mother's return to the campaign. The President and Vice-President of the United States, representing party leadership, met with Carol Ann and her father midmorning at the hospital. "It's a most exceptional, unforeseen phenomenon.", the President remarked, "The outpouring of support for Carol Ann matches that of her mother. Some seek high office, others are called. The people want you young lady."
