En exergue de cet étonnant récit, une histoire juive : "Au mois de juin 1942, un officier allemand s'avance vers un jeune homme et lui dit : Pardon, monsieur, où se trouve la place de l'Étoile ? Le jeune homme désigne le côté gauche de sa poitrine." Voici, annoncé en quelques lignes, ce qui anime le roman : l'inguérissable blessure raciale.

Le narrateur, Raphaël Schlemilovitch, est un héros hallucinatoire. À travers lui, en trajets délirants, mille existences qui pourraient être les siennes passent et repassent dans une émouvante fantasmagorie. Mille identités contradictoires le soumettent au mouvement de la folie verbale où le Juif est tantôt roi, tantôt martyr et où la tragédie la plus douloureuse se dissimule sous la bouffonnerie. Ainsi voyons-nous défiler des personnages réels ou fictifs : Maurice Sachs et Otto Abetz, Lévy-Vendôme et le docteur Louis-Ferdinand Bardamu, Brasillach et Drieu la Rochelle, Marcel Proust et les tueurs de la Gestapo française, le capitaine Dreyfus et les amiraux pétainistes, Freud, Rebecca, Hitler, Eva Braun et tant d'autres, comparables à des figures de carrousels tournant follement dans l'espace et le temps. Mais la place de l'Étoile, le livre refermé, s'inscrit au centre exact de la "capitale de la douleur".
