James Robinson is a black man with a passion for mountain climbing. He goes to Mt. Whitney in California for a weekend of outdoor fun and relaxation.
Maynerd Janchks, "Nerdo" to those who think they know him, is an adolescent with a dark secret. Nerdo is tormented by an abusive stepfather and is finally driven to an act of violence for which he is incarcerated. As a team of psychologists try to unravel the secret motive for Nerdo's violence, he is sent with three other young offenders on a "boot camp" rehabilitation outing under the supervision of a sadistic counselor. The group's objective is to climb Mt. Whitney.
When a freak storm traps the youths on the mountain summit, James decides to attempt a solo search and rescue. Against his own better judgement, James climbs into the storm looking for the lost group. In the end, the lives of James and the others will all be in the hands of the boy called Nerdo.
