Hasan Bangkaru is a child soldier in the GAM, a rebel army fighting for freedom for their homeland of Aceh, Indonesia. Wounded in an ambush by the Indonesian National Army, he hides in a tree while figuring out what he must do in order to survive. While there, he is taken care of by the unlikeliest of nursemaids. Once his strength has returned, he decides to leave the forest that has been his home for all of his life. When he finds a kind of refuge, he meets his fate, when one of the most tragic collisions of humanity with nature to occur in recent history literally sweeps him away.
