Description

The events of chapters 15-17, consisting of nine topics, are considered an extension of teachings that occurred in the upper room. Their application to the Church, based on this determination, raises issues of inconsistency with other teachings of Jesus and those found in the epistles. The application of the Vine, Branches, and Vinedresser (15:1-17) is just one of several challenges to interpreting and applying the truths in John's gospel.
This eBook is number two of nine in a series presenting interpretations and applications for the nine topics in chapters 15-17. The premise of our studies is based on our determination that this teaching occurred at a date prior to the transfiguration event. That period consisted of one week involving extensive teachings by Jesus, but only recorded by John; the Synoptics recorded this teaching as a summary statement. Considering the scope, context of Jesus' emphasis on leaving them (all of chapter 16), and the betrayal by one they trusted; we can understand their summary statement. The Holy Spirit, however, prompted John to recall the specifics, which he placed in his glory section, between the upper room events and the events of Jesus' arrest.
This pre-transfiguration setting provides meaning and application to John 15:1-17, with its application to the twelve. The ambiguities in any application to the Church are fully resolved, revealing its correct interpretation, and presenting applications intended by Jesus. The current application to the Church raises conflicts in doctrinal issues, including the eternal security provided in scripture such as John 3:16-18. The specific requirements contained in John 15:1-17 include abiding in belief Jesus is the Messiah, and believing in his words (both required as fruit of abiding).
Failure is a total loss of salvation, which cannot be undone. These and other ambiguities are fully resolved when this scripture text (along with all of John 15-17) is applied to the disciples under the Greek grammatical principle of hysteresis - a method of including events which occurred earlier - but not disclosing them until later.
