Description
Stephen Haggerty used to work for the British SAS. He was trained to go into the houses of Gulf Arabs in the Middle East and kill the guards and then the occupants. One day the British government threw Haggerty on the scrap heap and he was reduced to driving trucks for $7 an hour. Three years ago Stephen Haggerty was introduced to an American from Philadelphia and now he has a completely different kind of job for a very secretive organization based in Pennsylvania.
Mark Rafferty is a lumberjack in Oregon. In another life he used to be a drug dealer in Orlando in Florida. In those days Rafferty had had a Spanish name. He had a father from El Salvador and a mother from Texas and in looks and in height he favored his blond Texan mother which was why his name now was Mark Rafferty. Rafferty had been extremely useful to the drug lords in Orlando because he was a man who could travel in both worlds. His father had made sure the boy spoke Spanish but when he spoke English it was with the accent of a Texan and nobody ever realized he was anything else. Thus Mark Rafferty had been able to go to places others could not and he had also been able to deliver in areas others could not. It had been a good life with plenty of money and then one day things had gone south in a very bad way. He had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, ended up in jail and once there he had come to the attention of the FBI and at that point Rafferty had found that the FBI likes a guy that will stab a friend. At one time Rafferty's unofficial title had been FBI stool pigeon. That had been five years ago and he had put several of his ex-colleagues away for life. Once the FBI was done with him his usefulness to them had ended and he had been shunted away to Portland, Oregon with a new name and a new life.
Mark Rafferty life as a lumberjack in Oregon is a different life than the one he had in Orlando, it is calmer and more fulfilling and he feels he has become less shallow. Now his biggest problem is choosing which of the two women he is seeing to take to his bed that night but unknown to Rafferty Death has him in its sights and one of Death's agents is already in the air and headed to Portland right now.
