Don Carlos [German English Bilingual Edition]

Don Carlos was Schiller's major play after his first masterpiece, Die Räuber (Robbers). The play was written over a period of four years and extracts were published during this time (1786-1787), although the work was ongoing.
The historical Don Carlos(1545-1568) was born in 1545 to his fathers first wife, Maria Manuela of Portugal. He was nervous and eccentric, with paranoid features. His father asked him to bek kept under house arrest, where he died under mysterious circumstances.
Although Don Carlos looks like a family tragedy on the surface, many other layers are built into it. It is a classic artistic text of the Enlightenment and was completed just two years before the French Revolution. Schiller engaged with the essential themes of the time -- justice, equality, freedom of expression and conscience, religious bigotry and state persecution. It was primarily this thunderous play that led eventually to Schiller's being made an honorary citizen of the first French republic.
About the Author
Friedrich von Schiller (10 November 1759 - 9 May 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. He wrote on esthetics and ethics, elaborating on the concept of the good, the beautiful, and the sublime. He was also particularly interested in the concept of human freedom.
In 1799, after he moved to Weimar from Jena, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Goethe persuaded him to switch back to playwriting, and they founded the Weimar Theater. It became the leading theater in Germany. Their relationship and their frequent discussions on aesthetics is referred to as Weimar Classicism.
Schiller is considered by most Germans the most prominent classical German playwright. His dramas include The Robbers (Die Räuber), Fiesco (Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua), Don Carlos, The Wallenstein Trilogy, Mary Stuart (Maria Stuart), The Maid of Orleans (Die Jungfrau von Orleans), The Bride of Messina (Die Braut von Messina) and William Tell (Wilhelm Tell).
He died of tuberculosis 1805, at the age of 45.
