Description
Hannah Blackburn's birth was not one to be celebrated, as her mother was an unmarried girl still at home with her staunch Methodist parents, and her father in particular was acutely aware of the dishonour that this had brought to the family name. It would not be the first time that a member of his family had given birth out of wedlock; nor to his shame, would it be the last.
Brought up by her grandparents, in a life of poverty, the family pulled together and just about managed to make ends meet, but when her mother meets and marries a young man she leaves Hannah with her parents. Hannah felt abandoned, and was determined not to make the same mistakes as her mother.
With an uncle in prison and an aunt brutally raped, she was part of a family that experienced both tragedy and disappointment. Would Hannah ever find the love she so desperately needed, or would her journey in life suffer 'a tragedy too far'?
The life of the 19th century 'working classes' is vividly portrayed and is all the more poignant, as it is based on the author's own family.
