Description
Found wandering by a roadside as a three-year-old, Malachi Dent is living modestly as a historian of the Civil War in Kentucky's Bluegrass, but, like any other adopted child, has never stopped wondering about his past. One bleak November day while he is wildcrafting, his life's mystery comes to a head: he faints near a sinkhole that he unaccountably fears, and then awakes to find his collection bag full of valuable golden seal. Who has both driven him from his goal and helped him reach it?
As days pass, he starts receiving cryptic summonses to covert meetings at which he starts to learn details of his birth parents' death in a fire that burned them, but not their clothes -- their death in a quest to reform a shadowy priesthood. As he feels that he is starting to understand his past, his contacts vanish, and then he himself is abruptly detained as a witness in a hidden people's trial for treason.
He learns that some fear, but others hope, that he is his birth-father's heir, wielder of a gift that could change the hidden people's way of life and help them emerge from self-imposed underground exile into the modern world. The hidden people's leaders, however, deny Malachi's gift. Will he be able to learn to use it to regain his lost heritage? The answer to that question depends on enemies among his people, and perhaps on the Enemy of all of the people.
