Description

Sibyl Crawford, recently widowed, has given up acting to retire to the castle she and her late husband bought in England. Their dream had been to restore it, and undertaking that work makes her feel closer to him. She hires a historian, Gavin Winchester, to help her research the house, and he discovers that it, and the area around it, has an uneasy history involving rumors of dark deeds, and a number of disappearances.

One day, while she and Gavin are poking around a long-disused part of the castle, they discover that the door of one tower is covered with runes called "witch marks" intended to ward off evil, and is secured by a padlock so ancient that it breaks when Gavin strikes it. Inside, though, there is nothing of much interest. As they are leaving, Gavin utters a wish that they had been able to discover the secret of the locked tower.

Without warning, they are flung backward in time to the early twelfth century, a time when the castle belonged to the natural son of the Earl of Chester, a man so savage, he was known as "The Wolf." The son, Sir Geoffrey FitzHugh, is strangely unsurprised by their arrival, though, not at all the reception they would have expected. But he proves to be an ally, a fellow traveler in time.

Will they be trapped in a past that might prove inhospitable in the extreme, or will Geoffrey be able to help them return to their own time? And will the instant flare of desire between Geoffrey and Sibyl prove to be everyone's undoing?
