Description
Also called the 0.44 Caliber Killer, Berkowitz terrorized New York City from 29 July 1976 until 31 July 1977. His killing spree left six people dead, while another seven were wounded, some for life. During his trial, he so obviously enjoyed the publicity he received that New York State enacted legislation to prevent criminals from profiting from their notoriety, laws which other states later adopted.
The name, Son of Sam, came from his belief that he was receiving instructions to kill from a demon called Sam. Though Berkowitz initially pleaded guilty, he would later claim that he had not acted alone - that he was merely the fall guy for a group of murderers who wanted to sow fear in the city. This disturbing statement was supported by some law enforcement officials, as well as several witnesses to some of his killings.
