Black mountaineer James Robinson takes part in an adventure race across Sumatra. The five day race is meant to test his team's stamina and outdoor survival skills, but what no one told James is that the other three people on his team, two women and a man, are really government agents on a secret mission to watch over a woman racer on another team, a woman named Manis who is the daughter of a high-ranking Indonesian government official and who has been targeted by a Sumatran gangster.
The gangster, a drug and sex-slave trafficker named Setan, is believed to be trying to kidnap Manis, and James' team is trying to protect her. But on a deeper level, James' teammates are really using Manis as bait for Setan so the team can capture or kill him.
James unravels the motives of his teammates slowly over the course of the race, and in spite of himself gets drawn into the mission until the race becomes merely the background for a life and death struggle.
