Description
In this sequel to A Name Concealed, Malachi Dent must adjust to learning that he's one of the Svare, refugees from a lost land that their neighbors in Kentucky's Bluegrass mistakenly call Atlantis. As he works for a name among the Hidden People, he faces hope, challenge, and danger. The hope comes from his mother's family, helping him develop his gift of finding and his gift of reading holy relics recalling life in the Lost Land, offering him a career as a priest of Hu-Yan, the One, and supporting him in his courtship of the priestess Claudia. The challenge comes from Vasker Dar, a powerful member of the Svar council, who fears that Malachi is nursing his late father's ambition to rule the Svar as a prophet in the One's name. The danger comes from the Enemy, a shadowy entity that killed Malachi's parents with unearthly fire before his eyes when he was a child.
In his new life, Malachi, the heretical false prophet's unacknowledged son, uses both his recognized gifts and the condemned gift of prophecy to seek ancient Stones of Memory stolen from the Svare centuries before. Finding one of the lost Stones will make him a hero to many among the Svare, but also a threat to a way of life already old at the end of the last Ice Age. Each step he takes towards his goal increases the opposition of the fanatical Vasker Dar and brings Malachi closer to a second meeting with the Enemy -- a meeting that may well end in his fiery death as a heretic.
