Description

When psychotherapist Steve Wasserman became a "doggy-parent" for the first time to a tiny Cockapoo pup called Max, he couldn't shake from his mind the question that had been asked of the irascible Zen monk Zhaozhou over a thousand years ago: "Do dogs have souls?"

Zhaozhou's provocative answer to this question was delivered in a famous koan known as Mu. The Mu koan can be seen as both a riddle and a mind-boggling challenge designed to lead us into understanding important truths about ourselves and the world.

Part-memoir, part essay/meditation, part tail-wagging amble through the terrain of dogs, souls, and the relationships between humans and other creatures, Max and Mu explores the often messy ways in which we attempt to care for ourselves and others.
