Gregory, a lucid dreamer, gains the power to travel though dreams to the world of the Hopewell Exchange of central Ohio. He is dreaming of visiting the Native Americans who once lived at the mounds on his family property when he is attacked in his dream by an intruder from the present day.

Meeting the intruder, an archaeologist named Dr. Landon, in real life, Gregory learns that he was mistaken for an operative of a rival archaeologist who is using dream-travel to acquire antiquities for the black market. Landon offers Gregory a chance to travel back in time to meet great shamans who have gained powers of mind and body from dreamstones that have fallen from the Upper World onto the site of what Gregory knows as Serpent Mound. Taking the chance, Gregory can help solve a mystery that has baffled archaeologists: how the powerful, peaceful Hopewell Exchange vanished.

Gregory seizes the chance, but comes to suspect that the archaeologists who are studying a culture's end may be causing it.
