Description
Christmas, 1901. Elijah Blackstone has lately returned to London from fighting in the Anglo Boer War in South Africa, where he witnessed an outrage that still haunts him. He receives a telegram from his former captain, who is now commandant of the barracks at Caterham, asking for help to find his missing niece.
When he arrives in the pleasant and prosperous town, set in the north Surrey hills, he gradually unravels a mystery that leads him from a medieval wall painting, to the metropolitan asylum, and into the seedy world of Edwardian pornography.
This is the first in a series of Elijah Blackstone mysteries.
