Long has the Destroyer, the ancient enemy of mankind, brooded upon his defeat at the hands of Vesarion of Westrin. He has withdrawn to the depths of his icy wastes in the uttermost north, but he does not forgive and he does not forget. When Vesarion's son, Berendore, sets out to escort his wife's sister, Galenne, through the Great Forest on her way to Sirkris, he expects the journey to be uneventful - but in this he is greatly mistaken.

Catastrophe falls upon them and Galenne is abducted. Berendore and the companions he meets along the way, are forced to travel ever northwards into uncharted regions in a perilous quest to save her from the sinister creature that holds her captive.

Their journey takes them ever closer to the Destroyer's lair, where they must avoid capture by his cruel servants in all their many guises.

Yet they soon discover that in lands under the sway of such evil power, nothing is ever quite what it seems.
